Clothing
Berdans were issued several uniforms throughout the early stages of the war.
Prior to green uniforms being totally available, many were issued the standard dark blue jacket and light blue trousers. Once the supply of green uniforms dried up, or as replacements became necessary, they were issued dark blue jacket and light blue trousers. There was a mix of all green uniforms, part green part blue and all blue.In the first months of the war, they were issued Grey overcoats with grey Whipple hats. These were soon discarded for friendly fire reasons.
Berdan Frock Coats:
Beware the imported items for frock coats and trousers, the coloring makes you look like a green bean, no joke.
Best Option: Jarnagin Company, Quartermaster Shop
Cheapest but still ok: Milk Creek (they may not have buttons)
Berdan Trousers
Best Option: White and Wambaugh, Jarnagin Company, Quartermaster Shop
Cheapest but still ok: Milk Creek
Shirts
Shirt options vary, imported shirts tend not to be as nice as the handsewn local ones. Check out Chris Daley or Dan Wambaugh
Drawers
Dan Wambaugh has a do-it-yourself kit, it’s a great way to learn how to sew without anyone seeing if you screw up.
Non Berdan Uniform Items
Chris Daley, Dan Wambaugh should be consulted for uniform items that are standard infantry.
Hats
The imported hats are so terrible that they really don’t stay together for longer then one campaign. Tim Bender and Dirty Billy are your best options, with Mercury Sutlery being a cheaper alternative.
Equipment
Leathers
Leather Cartridge Box, slings and Cap pouches that are imported seem to be holding up well, the belt design leaves a lot to be desired. You can always purchase from Dixie leather works.
Leggings
You only have three options:
1) American Civil War Knapsacks
2) Dixie Leather Works
3) You don’t wear Leggings
Canvas Items
Tarred haversacks and double bag knapsacks from imported countries look ok and hold up fine (the tarred haversack less so). Missouri Boot and Shoe makes a nice double bag knapsack.
For a Berdan knapsack your only real choice is American Civil War Knapsacks.
Pup tents are readily available, stay away from metal (brass) grommets.
Tin/Steel Items
Please do not purchase tin canteens, get yourself stainless steel. Imports are fine here. The tin cups that are imported don’t hold up at all, go for a stainless steel cup. You’ll want a plate and some silverware for eating purposes. The original Berdan mess kit is available from Village Tin Smiths.
